The new Canadian reality show Word Travels debuted last night, following two travel writers–and their wacky adventures!–to Bolivia. Julia “The Travel Junkie” Dimon, a nationally syndicated columnist, and Robin “Modern Gonzo” Esrock, a freelancer, both star as the road-weary, notebook toting travel writers you’d like to imagine them as.
Now, we don’t get the Outdoor Life Network, so we couldn’t tune in. But from the looks of this commercial, we were spared a cliche-filled love letter to some fictional view of the travel writing profession. (Also, what’s with the awful music?) Let’s go to the videotape:
• Number of Moleskine notebooks seen: 3
• Number of shots of Robin wearing a ridiculous hat: 10
• Seconds elapsed before we’re told something “surprising” about travel writing: 15
• Seconds elapsed before cliched “weathered and wise local man” photo-op: 18
• Number of shooting ranges visited: 1
We’d love to be wrong and find out that Word Travels is actually, somehow a cool show. But if you really want to get the inside scoop on travel writing, pick up Chuck Thompson’s book, Smile When You’re Lying.
